Five Things To Do With Your Digital Images (Beside Keeping Them in the Digital Abyss!) | Photographer Tips and Recommendations For Printing and Showing Off Your Photos

keepsakes_DawnMGibsonPhotography_002.JPG

Raise your hand if you’ve invested in having a photographer document a special time in your life, and then after you received your images, did nothing with those beauties except share them to social media? And raise your hand if you’ve been telling yourself that THIS is the year you’d really like to get a few of your photos PRINTED and up on your walls, into a keepsake album (or two), and/or even into photo frames on your desk that haven’t been updated in 5 years. If you’re raising that hand (or both even?), then this post is for you!

Today I’m sharing some super simple ideas with you on what to do with all those digital images! And to all the sweet mamas reading this post, with Mother’s Day RIGHT around corner, this is also a great post to share with your husbands for gift ideas! ;-)

You’ve got the photos… now is the time to bring them to life!

After you’ve made a safe backup copy (or three) of all the digital copies of your images, the next best thing you can do to enjoy your favorite images everyday AND ensure those memories never fade, is to bring them to life in some way through printing. Here are 5 quick and easy things to do something with your photos beside post them to social media, with recommendations on where you can get things made on a consumer level, too!

1) Photo prints

The tried and true, never-goes-out-of-style photo print is by far the easiest way to bring your digital images to life. You can put prints inside frames that will go your walls, shelves, and/or office desk, leave them out on your coffee table in decorative bowls, and even store them in adorable boxes such as the linen keepsake boxes I offer as add-ons to my clients. There are so many options, and with online uploading/ordering of digital images and shipping direct to your door, it’s easier than ever to get photo prints into your hands!

If you are a client of mine, ordering directly through your online gallery is an easy option available to you (as well as an ordering option for your family/friends). The images are already online, so all you need to do is select the size photo(s) you’re looking for, adjust the photo crops if necessary, insert your shipping & payment information, and within days the prints will arrive to your door.

However, if you’re looking to print images that are no longer in an online gallery or photos you have taken yourself, I highly, highly recommend iprintfromhome.com, which is located right in our very own Kenmore, NY. They are a professional printing lab offering great rates, quick turnaround times, and you can either pick up your prints in person or they can ship directly to your door. All you have to do is upload your images and complete your order. (If you are interested in using them, and care to credit me as your referral, you can do so by mentioning my name when you create a new account). And because I’m always asked… if you do use them, I always recommend the Photographic & Inkjet Prints in Lustre finish. Lustre is definitely the way to go with photo prints as glossy leaves finger prints and matte finish tends to seem dull when used on traditional photo paper.

Alternatively, if you are looking for prints that are not a traditional photo paper, and more of a matte cardstock look/feel, I highly recommend Artifact Uprising. Their Square Print Set (the top photo in the image above) is my personal go-to for the prints I leave laying out in a decorative dish at my house.

But what about frames, you ask? I often find frames at Michael’s or Joann’s when they have their frame sales, or at Target depending on what my needs are. Unfortunately, most big box stores no longer make/sell real wooden frames (which is my personal favorite), so for your solid wood frame needs, I highly recommend having something custom made with Five Acres Furniture. Shawn’s hand-made frames are breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL and so worth the investment.

2) Canvas wall-hangings

Do you have a wall in your home in need of a large photo, or a collage of several photos, but the thought of finding and hanging frames sounds a bit time consuming? Well, then a canvas might just be the answer to all your photo hanging desires! With the canvas wall-hangings I offer to my clients, there is so little effort needed to actually get your images up onto your wall(s). Built around a sturdy wooden frame, each canvas has photo-wrapped edges, a fully-finished back and comes with pre-assembled, ready-to-hang hooks. These durable, high quality, and affordable canvases won't deform or wrinkle over time, and they're super easy to hang (and clean, too)! Just pop a single nail in the wall for each canvas, or you can even just set the frame upright against the wall for a more casual feel.

There are a variety companies out there that will do canvas wraps, but beware – not all canvases are created equal and you absolutely get what you pay for using consumer photo printing sites. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a company I would recommend at a consumer level, because the quality from the company I use (that sells only to professional photographers) knocks the socks off any other company I’ve tested. Whether you are a client or not, I would be thrilled to order a canvas for you! You can find more about pricing and ordering a canvas here. And if you need help deciding which image (or collage of images) to order, just let me know. I’m happy to offer my canvas recommendations at no charge to anyone placing an order with me.

3) Photo books & Keepsake Albums

Whether it’s a special occasion (like a wedding or birth), an in-home Real Life family session, or even images you’ve taken on your own from a vacation or over the course of a year, photo books are the perfect way to bring your story – and a large quantity of photos – to life!

I have personally been putting together photo albums ever since I got my hands on a camera (way back in middle school!). Way, way back in the day I would insert 4x6 photo prints into sleeves contained within albums for each school year or special adventure (like a family trip to Florida!). But, as you can imagine, the print costs added up, and the albums themselves are incredibly bulky. So when I transitioned to digital photography in college, I also transitioned to the more modern photo book.

For your everyday style photo book, where you are looking to include many images and looking to keep costs down, there are a variety of consumer sites available to you at any time – Artifact Uprising, Shutterfly, Blurb, and Pinhole Press are just a few I have heard others used and have tested out myself. These style books are great for re-telling travel stories or showcasing favorite photos of your little one throughout the year. Each site mentioned above includes design programs to lay out the pages, and a few have options to upload PDFs if you’re indesign savy instead. These style books are usually made with thin paper pages that bend in the center of your book, and are likely to get crinkled over time. The quality of image printing will greatly vary depending on the company you use.

For these reasons, I recommend going with keepsake albums (pictured above) for the really special occasions, such as a wedding or birth story, and even in-home family sessions. These albums are hand-made with thick, durable, lay-flat pages and the images printed on photograph paper so they are crisp and clear. If you are looking for something long lasting, made with quality and timelessness in mind, this is definitely the way to go. These albums are available for purchase by professional photographers only, but I would be LOVE to design and order a keepsake album for you! 4) Magnets

Where is the one place in your home you know you and your family members will be standing at least once throughout the day? The fridge! Printing small images onto magnets is a great way to add some character to your kitchen and bring you joy as you’re starting the day, trying to figure out what’s for lunch, or winding down at night with a late night snack. There are a variety of companies online that offer magnet printing. Or you can even DIY some yourself using photo prints, and one-side adhesive magnet strips (which you can find available for purchase from most local craft stores).

And last, but certainly not least….

5) Calendars

Are you a busy couple or family that likes to keep track of your weekly/monthly activities on a traditional wall calendar? Then this is a great option for you! You can pick and choose images that you love the most for each month, which is a great way to show off your images (and reflect back on when you’re adding new things to the busy month(s) ahead!

I’m personally a google cal type of gal (hence no photo to share!), but if I were to order a traditional printed calendar, I’m totally loving the options Pinhole Press has available. The large date blocks – and image space! – are nice and big on their wall calendars, which is perfect for busy couples and families!

Frame them, display them, hang them, create tangible pieces in all the formats that suit your needs and desires! Whatever your preference, just be sure get those images out of the digital abyss! Thank you so much for checking out this post! I hope it was helpful. But if something is missing or you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I’m happy to help with all your printing needs!

The Parkot's Coit House Birth with Fika Midwifery and Wholenine Wellness | Buffalo Birth Photographer

An actual written definition of the word support is to bear all or part of the weight of or to hold up. There is no greater place to really feel the meaning behind these words than in birth. Bringing a child into this world is an arduous task, especially when you’re attempting a natural birth without intervention of pain medication. From those in the room alongside a woman in labor, especially for a spouse/significant other, there is a requirement for support like you may have never imagined giving. It requires remaining positive and encouraging even though the mom may be crying out in pain, saying she can’t do it (which by the way, all moms say this; every. single. one. of them). And it may even require actually, physically holding up mom so she can drop down and labor as her body is telling her to. Birth is a heavy experience, and the weight of it is best to be shared with people who you love and trust, and most of all, who you can count on for support.

The Parkots arrived to the Coit House on a wintery Wednesday evening, and just after sunrise welcomed their newest addition, another baby boy to complete their family. This mama worked so hard to bring her baby earthside, and throughout the evening received nothing but love and support from her husband, doula (Rebecca of Wholenine Wellness), and midwife/assistant team (Maura and Sigrid of Fika Midwifery). It was the kind of birth story that gives me all the feels. The support felt in the room was so strong, and when I look back on these images, it puts me right back in those moments all over again. That is my greatest goal as a fly-on-the-wall birth photographer. I want my clients to see moments like this where husband and wife are really leaning into one another, connecting and supporting one another throughout the entire birth experience. Whether it’s a painful moment or a joyous one (because there will be plenty of both!), it’s ALL part of your birth story, and it’s such an honor for me to give you a glimpse of these moments during such a transformational life experience.

If you’re looking to have personalized, holisitic care throughout your pregnancy and birth, I highly recommend Maura and Lydia of Fika Midwifery as well as Rebecca of Wholenine Wellness for your doula needs. And if you are interested in having a home birth-like experience without actually being at home, the Coit House may be just the option you’re looking for. Providing a quiet space to labor, the rooms at the Coit House are fully equipped with plush beds for laboring and rest, a birthing pool, shower, and an assortment of tools on site to help you progress and work through your labor.

Join the team at Fika Midwifery on Tuesday, April 2nd for a Welcome Session presentation to learn more about how you can have a positive and empowering pregnancy and birthing experience!

I respect the privacy of my clients and only share images that are client-approved for sharing.

In-home Newborn Session with the Finnegan Family | Buffalo Newborn Photographer

I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Mallory a little bit over the last few years when she was a bridesmaid in several weddings I photographed for two of her closest friends. When I got the inquiry to photograph her and her hubby’s newest family addition, a sweet baby boy, I was over-the-moon excited!

I put newborn sessions on hold the last few years because I really wanted to focus more on the documentary photography side of my business – services I am able to provide with my birth stories and real life family sessions. Photographing the candid, natural moments that occur between loved ones without any direction from behind the camera is my deepest passion. However, when I had my own son back in May, I realized how important it is to have photographs that are also lightly posed in nature, too. The years (especially with little ones) go by so quickly, and it’s so easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day and forget to carve out time for preserving life as it was like in the present moment. For the Finnegan family, their in-home newborn session was focused on preserving these early moments spent together at home with their fresh baby in their arms and their fur baby loving on their sweet newborn. I documented the tiny toes and baby yawns, all the hard work that went into creating the most perfect nursery, and they posed for some first family portraits together. Next year, their lives and the atmosphere of their home are going to look so different, and it brings me so much joy to be able to provide these images that preserve the moments of today.

My heart fills with joy anytime I am invited to be a part in capturing a special story for a couple or family. I am excited to again be offering in-home newborn sessions like this one, along with continued photography services around families, including Maternity Sessions, Birth Stories, First Hours (Fresh 48) Sessions, Real Life Family Sessions, and Traditional Family Portraits. I am currently booking spring and summer sessions, so if preserving family memories is a priority for you this year, I’d LOVE to hear from you and discuss your upcoming photography needs!

A Beautiful, Laid-Back Wedding at the Historic Knox Farms Estate | Buffalo Wedding Photographer

buffalo-wedding-photographer-dawnmgibsonphotography-knox-farms-east-aurora-natalie-dan-_0095.jpg

You know how sometimes in life you meet someone and you just instantly want to be their best friend? Well, I’ve been very fortunate in my business to create great relationships with nearly all of my clients, and in many instances, it’s as if I’ve been adopted into their families. Beyond the wedding day, they invite me back year and after year to document their love as it expands to fur babies, real babies, or even just more for one another. It’s undeniably the biggest honor and I’m so grateful for all the amazing friendships that have come from photographing so many couples on their wedding days.

Natalie and Dan are no exception to this. From day one, I knew we’d become lifelong friends. They’re so goddamn nice. Like, legit the nicest people you’ll ever, ever meet. They LOVE hard – whether just each other, their loved ones, life all around. And they are such joyful, positive souls. Even my husband wants to hang out with them, and no lie he and I are both over here living life viacariously through them these days post-babe and may or may not be waiting for them to have children of their own so we can all just get together for baby play dates. Needless to say, they are my type of people and therefore, this wedding day was soooo beyond special to be a part of.

Natalie and her girls got ready in the Knox Farms bridal suite, with Natalie’s baby brother doing some of the girls’ makeup. (How awesome is that to have a built-in makeup fixer on hand all day?) Dan and his crew got ready downstairs, and helped with setting up everything for the ceremony, including the big heptagon piece Dan MADE for the ceremony. Natalie had the vision, and he built it for her. (Ladies… marry a man who will build you things or make your visions come true. I’m serious.) Once ready, Natalie exchanged a first look with her father, and then did a First Look with Dan – both times her eyes swelling up with tears before they even turned around to see her. The ceremony was another tear-jerker as Natalie and Dan exchanged their own personalized vows. And the incredibly beautiful speeches at dinner brought on more tears. Needless to say, there were emotionally-charged moments of happiness and joy like that throughout the day, and it was perfectly beautiful, and perfectly true to who they are as a couple. To even out the tears, there was a fun pig roast style dinner catered by Occassions by Osteria, capped with yummy homemade pies from Everything Pie Farm Bakery, and A LOT of dancing. The dance floor was packed all night long, with everyone parting the night away to the music of Saxman Slim under the tent provided by McCarthy’s Tents and Events.

From start to finish, it was a beautiful day to be a part of, and I am so excited to share a few highlights here today. But first, some stellar recommendations for any couples currently wedding planning:

Do you have any recommendations for future couples planning a wedding? Stay true to yourselves every step of the way. Try not to get caught up in the little details. One day I found myself browsing monogrammed cocktail napkins, and I was like, “WHAT. AM. I. DOING?!” Just make sure you have good food, good booze, good music, and most importantly a great photographer because photographs are all that will be left of that whirlwind day. We wish we could’ve been ten people at one time in order to see everyone, do everything and be everywhere, but thankfully the photos give us glimpses of those unseen moments for us! Lastly... if you can, go on a honeymoon right away! It gives you something to look forward to during those final days of planning/stressing, and it was the perfect way to celebrate and relax as husband and wife.

Thank you, Nan & Dan for everything!!
And for being the sweetest people ever and asking me to be in a photo, too.
You’re the best. <3
