Ideas For Adding Sentiment and Honoring Lost Loved Ones on Your Wedding Day

Losing someone you love is never easy. Especially when it is a significant loss of someone you love so much and truly wish could be a part of your wedding day. In my nearly 10 years experience photographing weddings, I have had the honor of photographing sentimental details for couples that feature loved ones they were not able to have by their side on their wedding day. Here are a few ideas if you’re searching for ways to honor your own loved ones on your wedding day!

1) Placing a coat and a favorite photo over the chair where they would have sat during the ceremony.

2) Draping a beautiful arrangement of flowers on the back of a chair they would have sat in during the ceremony.

3) Placing charms with images of your loved ones and/or your favorite quotes from them on the heels of your shoes or wrapped around your bouquet of flowers (so they will be with you as you walk down the isle).

4) Wearing a dress that’s been passed down through generations, honoring the loved one who wore it first.

6) Adding images to a centerpiece at the dinner table they would have been seated at.

5 Tips For Having A Stress-Free Wedding Day | Insight and Recommendations from a Buffalo and WNY Wedding Photographer

Over the last few years in business, I have photographed a little over 150 weddings (crazy, right?!), which has given me a ton of insight when it comes to the wedding planning process. Today I want to share a few of my top tips when it comes to wedding planning and preparing for a stress-free day you’ll love from start to finish! Maybe this information would so be helpful to share with a friend or family member currently planning their own dream wedding. Or maybe this is useful info you’d like to know for the future! Either way, grab a cup of coffee, bookmark this page for reference, or feel free to pass it on to a friend who could use some helpful and handy wedding planning advice!

5 Tips For Having A Stress-Free Wedding Day

Prepare in Advance.

You have been – or will be – planning big details (venue, photographer, DJ) and nitty gritty details (favors, seating chart, readings) for months leading up to the big day. But one thing that is sometimes overlooked until closer to that special day is the biggest factor of all: your timeline! If I didn’t love photography so much, I’d probably want to be a wedding planner because one of my favorite things is to help couples put together a rough timeline to follow on their wedding day and to help them plan logistics like where to go for photos and when. I’ve seen where things run late, and can help guide you with timing for all parts of your day to make sure you’re enjoying every minute, not stressing about the time!

Keep things Tidy.

This is key for the morning if you want beautiful, clutter-free images. Especially if you’re getting ready with a group of people in a small area. Try to keep the bags, hangers, and misc everything to one area AWAY from the windows and natural light as I’ll probably be trying to utilize that area for photos. If everyone does this right from the start of entering the room, it will keep your entire prep area as tidy as possible, which is great for portraits but also great for maintaining a clean space. And a clean, tidy space gives joy, am I right?!

Delegate on the Day Of.

Having a day-of coordinator is amazing, because you can rest-assured everything will get done as it needs to without needing to worry about it yourself. If you’re searching for recommendations in this area, I can’t recommend Ellicottville Events or Social Maven enough. Both of these ladies and their teams are top notch, and I love working them!

BUT if it’s not in your means to have a wedding or day of coordinator, delegating specific tasks to a few other people will be essential. If you’re the type who likes to do things your own way to make sure it’s done (I get you, I’m the same!), entrust these tasks with someone who you know understands exactly what you’re looking for and how you’d do it yourself. My only recommendation is try to limit the delegating of tasks for family and wedding party members who may need to be getting ready themselves or with you for special parts during the day. This ties back in to the planning ahead – if you need to delegate a task you only trust mom with, be sure you’ve planned her enough time for her to get it done and then get where she needs to to get ready herself (without rushing), especially if you want her make it to the ceremony or family portraits, on time!

Take time just the two of you.

I can never stress this one enough with my clients. Your wedding day is going to be a buzz of conversation, laughter, a quickly eaten meal, dancing, so many emotions, and hopefully a bite/slice/plate or two of dessert! You’ll be pulled in one direction to the next and constantly thinking about who you still need to thank for coming. But whatever you do, be sure to take some time to enjoy a little bit of your day together... away from it all. We can even schedule it in to your timeline so you don’t forget! Past clients, Brianna and Gabe, took their time together immediately after the ceremony, by heading off in a direction from the guests, while my second photographer and I began to rally up their family for the portraits that were to follow. Doing this right after the ceremony gave them time to experience those “just married” feelings together with one another, before diving in to a night of celebration with their loved ones. Even just five minutes will center you, and (speaking from experience as a past bride myself) will probably be one of your favorite moments from your entire wedding day.

Focus on what’s important & keep it simple!

As with the planning of any big event or gathering of friends and family, sometimes it’s hard to let go and just live in the moment. This is particularly hard to do if you’re planning a wedding with a lot of moving parts or extra stuff that really is not needed during the day. So before you even begin getting into all the details of planning, ask yourself what is MOST important to you on your wedding day? If the answer is your commitment to one another and celebrating your love with family and friends, then guess what… that’s really all you need. Someone to marry you, a really great band or DJ to play music, food and drinks, chairs to sit on, a place to accommodate your ceremony and celebration, and of course a photographer to document it all. Everything else – from centerpieces, guest books, signage, favors, etc – is just a bonus and I’ve seen some couples go over-the-top on details that truth-be-told, are not even necessary. Focus on what’s important, keep it simple, and on the day of you’ll have so much less stress not needing to worry about all the extra stuff!

Thank you so much for your time, especially if you stuck with me through to the end. I truly hope this helps you as you begin or dive deeper into your wedding planning and may you have the most enjoyable, stress-free day!

Thoughts on Wedding Florals Through the Eyes of a Florist | Guest Post from Alicia of William's Florist

Today I am so excited to share this wonderful guest post from Alicia Reilly of William’s Florist:

As the floral wedding consultant at William's Florist, I often have brides tell me that flowers are one of the hardest elements they need to shop for during the wedding planning process. Why? Often times, a bride gets 3 VERY different quotes from 3 VERY different florists, which can be stressful when they think they are getting the same thing at each place.

Why are floral quotes so different? Think of florists as steakhouses! That sounds strange but hear me out - you'll get a very different steak if you go to Applebee's than if you were to go to the Chophouse. There's nothing wrong with an Applebee's steak if you're just craving some beef, feel like dressing casual and don't want to spend a lot. But there's also nothing wrong with putting heels on and dropping a pretty penny on a filet mignon if you really value a gourmet meal and a fancy ambiance. Florists are the same. You often get what you pay for. Also, Pinterest can be helpful but is also difficult. When you show a florist a picture from Pinterest, you need to make sure they are quoting true to picture.

When planning your wedding, I highly recommend placing value on each element of your wedding. What is most important to you? Your dress? The food? The decor? The photos? I would set your priorities and then budget accordingly. When it comes to flowers, some people really value them and some people... don't. And that's OK.

As a florist, I fall in to the category of designing for the brides who really value the look of their flowers! I feel as florists, we are one of the few vendors that can really speak to the personality of the couple through the creative use of flowers. We do not offer floral packages, and every wedding we design is unique. Here is why I would recommend using a high quality florist if you really value the flowers at your wedding:

1. QUALITY OF PRODUCT: There is nothing more terrifying to me than a bride carrying brown or droopy flowers. When purchasing flowers for your wedding, they should be what you've always dreamed of! It's important to hire a florist that knows their varieties and knows how to maintain quality... experience is necessary in this category. For example, there are certain varieties of roses that just don't open. Who wants a tight bullet-looking rose in their wedding bouquets!? I have studied the best varieties of roses and only use top of the line for our weddings. Another example:  hydrangea. This popular wedding flower wilts VERY EASILY when it doesn't have enough water. For that reason, I never recommend using hydrangea in bouquets since they are often out of water for hours on end. When we use them in centerpieces, we process them in a unique way to make them last!

2. QUALITY OF SERVICE: You can tell a florist is all about service if they make the process of shopping for your wedding flowers easy for you. They must be organized, detail oriented and timely. If they do this, you can have faith that the day of your wedding, things will go smoothly. Our product is all about TIME. On a hot July day, your flowers need to stay in the cooler as long as possible. The flowers are often delivered when the bride is getting dressed and about to start pictures. There is no time to be late. There is no reason to have your Uncle Joe pick up your flowers and deliver them to where they need to be in his 80 degree car, making fast turns as the flowers flail around in the car! Hire a florist that will deliver to you and will be on time!

3. CREATIVITY: Hire a florist that you trust creatively. Look at pictures of their past work to ensure your vibe matches their style. Give them creative freedom to design your dream wedding flowers. I am so lucky to design for these types of brides! This is when we do our best work! With creative flexibility, I can often buy really unique elements that are available on the flower market that I didn't necessarily discuss with the bride, but fits her style and color palate perfectly. Those week-of purchases are what really make the florals attention grabbing.

Below are some pictures of me that Dawn of Dawn M Gibson Photography captured while I was setting up a wedding at a private residence in Eden, NY. I feel as if this wedding captures all 3 elements really well. First, it was hot as Haiti that day. I was chugging water like crazy... imagine how thirsty all my flowers were! It was so important that we chose high quality flowers and didn't set them up too early. As for creativity - this was a fun one! It took a lot of logistics and creative thinking to design the hanging chandelier and get it hung with McCarthy Tents. I also was given permission to cut some florals from the property's yard to make a couple arrangements for the bar. How fun!

Overall, it's my goal to design a bride's dream wedding flowers. I am so grateful to have such a passion for my career and am thankful for the couples that hire me to live out this passion. It's a lot of detail oriented planning combined with intense physical work... but so worth it! My overall recommendation when choosing a florist is to choose one that you trust. When you hire a florist you trust, you can relax and actually enjoy your wedding day instead of worrying about dead flowers and running late. My favorite part of the wedding day is showing a bride her bouquet and showing her the reception room all set up. The creative process comes to life in those moments, and there is nothing better than making flower dreams come true!

Historic & Charming New York Wedding Venues That Can Host Your Ceremony and Reception All At One Location

Yay! You’re engaged! Congratulations and welcome to the exciting phase in your life of wedding planning. Maybe you’re planning to say “I dos” at an intimate location, or maybe you’re planning to throw a big celebration. Either way, the first step in the planning process is to lock in your when and where!

After nearly a decade photographing weddings in Buffalo and beyond, I’ve had the honor of being invited to document ceremonies and receptions in wide array of locations and wedding venues. From ballrooms to barns to old industrial spaces to lakefront vineyards, and everything in between. Nearly all of my favorite venues have three things in common:

1) The venues are easily accessible with the capability of having almost everything on site – sometimes even from your morning prep all the way up through the late night dancing, though at the very minimum, capacity to hold both your ceremony and reception on site.

2) Some are able to hold only 80 people, others can hold upwards of 300. Some are more traditional and others have a more modern flair. Regardless of their unique differences, they are all brimming with charm, character, and a rich history.

3) They are beautiful to photograph in AND work at. In other words, the lighting is amazing, there are great nooks on site to do your formal photos (this is GREAT for keeping things simple and stress free on the day of), AND the staff treats its vendors well (which means I can only hope they’d be treating you even better).

Keeping these qualities in mind, I’ve decided to put together a list of my top wedding venues throughout New York State to help those on the hunt for their perfect wedding day venue! If you missed it, I have an entirely separate post for Western New York wedding venues (located in/around Buffalo, NY), which can be viewed here. Today’s post is specifically for locations I love from Rochester all the way to Albany! Happy planning!
